Super Bowl LV Moved to Tampa Bay
The 2021 Super Bowl has moved from Los Angeles to Tampa Bay after a unanimous vote by the NFL, according to an L.A. Times report. L.A. will now host the 2022 Super Bowl.
This is due to construction delays which project the new Rams & Chargers stadium to be done in 2020, delayed from 2019. According to Rich Hammond of the Orange County Register, NFL rules stipulate that a stadium must be open for two full regular seasons before being considered for hosting the Super Bowl.
Tampa Bay was the logical choice since they had a bid to host in 2020, losing to Miami. Tampa has hosted the Super Bowl four times- in 1984, 1991, 2001, and 2009.
Tampa ranks fourth in this category. Miami and New Orleans have hosted 10 times each. Los Angeles has hosted seven times (Pasadena accounting for five of those).
Only three northern states have ever hosted the Super Bowl- New Jersey most recently as well as Michigan and Minnesota. This is because the league thinks that far fewer people will travel to watch a game in a freezing stadium in February. All but four Super Bowls have taken place in a southern state.
